Paws For Purpose

There are lots of ways we help kids be kids, through music, art and play.  Our facility dog and volunteer pet therapy dogs are more amazing resources to help kids focus on the positive.

The Children's Hospital VOLUNTEERS was honored to work with Edmond North BALTO, raising enough funds to make The Children's Hospital the first hospital in Oklahoma to add a facility therapy dog to the team!  For more than 20 years, kids have loved the support of our dedicated volunteer pet therapy dogs and handlers.  Over the past 10 years, a new best practice has emerged—to bring in facility dogs to help meet clinical goals while providing gentle support.

Our sweet Targa comes to work every day with her handler Skyler.  They are available to respond to needs and requests in the moment, support kids during procedures, in intensive care and surgical settings, and at other times when a volunteer pet therapy dog would be unavailable.  Blending clinical care goals with the loving comfort of a dog has been a huge success.

What’s next for Paws for Purpose?  We will roll out trading cards for all of our dogs, begin a series of special events (Reading to Dogs, Dog Safety and more) and work to grow by an additional four-paws.  Our goal is to recruit a few new volunteer pet therapy dogs and add a facility dog for our oncology and hematology patients by the end of 2018—and up to three more facility dogs, after that!

I see them as friends. I go to hang out with them, just like I would hang out with my friends. It lets them feel like a kid… not like they’re in the hospital.

Wiggle Out Loud!
sunday, October 20th

Join us once again at Wiggle Out Loud, a free, outdoor family music festival in Oklahoma City!

As we slide into our seventh year of Wiggle Out Loud, we are happy to host a lineup of great performers! Our headliner this year, Koo Koo Kanga Roo, will be joined by other greats such as Jazzy Ash and the Sugar Free Allstars, among others!

BE A SPONSOR: Stay tuned for information on how you can become a sponsor! Encourage employees & friends to get involved with this amazing festival, too! Be Active. Be Healthy. Rock Out. WIGGLE OUT LOUD!

NEW THIS YEAR: We joined with Edwards and Cesar Chavez elementary schools on GoNoodle Plus active classroom programs and wellness events with Jabee and Raul Reyes. We’re hosting a Wiggle Out Loud preview night in collaboration with the Wheeler Summer Concert Series on Friday, July 19th.

IMPACT LIVES: Tens of thousands of community kids & families have joined us at Wiggle Out Loud—a free, safe event—while learning to be active, healthy & creative. Additionally, proceeds give thousands of kids at the hospital access to art, live music & Music Therapy programs. Starting this fall, we will bring professional artists in to collaborate on projects with the kids - and kick-off a full campaign to support Art Therapy, enhance our music/TV studio and film programs, and build new innovation and maker programs.  Art is healing & impactful to kids in the hospital:

- Not all but many kids have chronic illnesses which may keep them from community arts experiences
- 65-70% are low income, for whom cost, travel, access & time can be barriers to participation in the arts

Mark your calendars and spread the word to help us continue growing Wiggle Out Loud & creative arts programs of The Children’s Hospital Volunteers 501(c)3 charity—encouraging all kids to play, get moving, be creative, enjoy music & art, laugh & be healthy.
