Patient Pal Volunteers

Patient Pal Volunteers – In-Patient Units

These volunteers are placed on a specific unit and offer a fun companionship to our patients. They receive information about our in-patients and often spend much of their time in the patients’ rooms playing board games, making crafts or playing video games. These volunteers can often bring patients to playrooms, events in the hospital or to our large Zone playroom as a fun way to leave the room. Patient Pal In-Patient Volunteers also offer much needed breaks to family members who need to leave the room or even the hospital for a brief period of time. Patient Pal In-Patient Volunteers work under the direction of a Child Life Specialist on that unit. In-Patient Units include:

  • Pediatric Medical Services
  • Surgical Unit
  • Hematology, Oncology and Stem Cell Transplant Unit
  • Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU)
  • Pediatric Epilepsy Monitoring Unit (PEMU)

Preferred shift times vary per unit and may be discussed with the Volunteer Coordinator. Most common shift times are M-F 9am-12pm, 10am-1pm, 12pm-3pm, 1pm-4pm and 3pm-7pm.

Patient Pals Volunteers – Outpatient Units

Outpatient areas within a children’s hospital are often the most stressful- and are sometimes the hardest places for children to be due to long waiting periods. Patient Pal Outpatient Volunteers offer an opportunity for play and social interactions during what would otherwise be a long, tiresome wait. These volunteers distract our patients from thoughts of surgery, pain or even hunger for those who cannot eat as they wait. These volunteers distract children from such thoughts simply by playing and being a companion. Patient Pal Outpatient Volunteers work under the direction of a Child Life Specialist on that unit.
